Preparing
to learn
Before
you do anything else, you need to get a provisional licence. For
more information on getting a provisional license, please go to
the DVLA
website.
Please
note: You will need to be able to read a number plate at 20 metres
(66 feet) before you can take a driving lesson.
Learning
to drive isn't cheap, but you will be gaining a skill that is
for life and means freedom to come and go when and where you choose.
According
to the latest Driving Standards Agency (DSA) information (click
here to find out more), the pupils with the best chance of
passing their practical tests have around 45 hours professional
driving tuition combined with plenty of additional practice. This
gives you an idea how much this could cost you, as well as tests
fees and your license fees.
Nationally
there is only a 43% pass rate and between 25%-35% pass rate in
the London test centres, which means the first time pass rate
is much lower. The reason for such a low national rate is because
candidates are not properly prepared. You must be able to drive
consistently well, with confidence and without any assistance
or guidance from your instructor. If you can't, then you are not
ready for the test. Waiting until you are ready will save you
time and money.
