Theory and Practical Tests

Theory and hazard perception tests come first.

You need to pass your theory and hazard perception test at the same time before you can apply for your practical test.

The Theory Test

The theory test is a computer based, touch screen examination which can be taken at various centres around the country. It is a 57 minute test consisting of 50 multiple choice questions. Questions are chosen at random from a bank of over 1,000 questions, and you answer by touching the screen. During the test you have the option to skip questions and return to them later. You will need to answer at least 43 questions correctly to pass the theory test.

The Hazard Perception Test

After a short interval, you will then move on to the hazard perception test. This test will require you to watch 14 video clips containing several hazards for you to identify. The quicker you identify the hazard, by clicking the mouse, the more points you will score. There will be 15 main hazards in the test each worth 5 points. The pass mark for this test is 44 out of a possible 75. You must pass both the theory and hazard perception tests together to gain a theory test certificate.

The Practical Driving Test

The Driving Test will begin with an eyesight check and then vehicle safety questions. After this you will begin your Drive which will include Manoeuvres. You will pass your Driving Test if you can show the examiner the following skills:

• drive safely
• complete the set exercises
• know the Highway Code and can demonstrate this through your driving

You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the driving test. However, if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the driving test.
