Theory Test
Whilst the theory test is largely home based training, we will always help pupils with their theory training wherever possible through our driving instruction and answering any questions pupils may have on any theory or driving related area.
With a professional and enthusiastic approach to teaching our aim is always to guide every pupil through the complete learning process from beginner through to driving test success. Below is some information about the two parts of the theory test to help you understand what it involves.
Taking your theory test
The multiple choice part is delivered using a touch screen computer and the hazard perception part records your responses through the use of a computer mouse button.
You must pass both parts on the same sitting otherwise you will be required to take the whole test again.
Part One – Multiple choice
A question and several answers will appear on screen and you have to select the correct answer to the question by touching the screen. Some questions may require more than one answer.
For cars and motorcycles you'll be asked 50 questions in 57 minutes and the pass mark is 43 out of 50.
Part two – Hazard perception
The Hazard part is also delivered on a computer but you respond by clicking a button on a mouse. You'll be presented with a series of 14 video clips (each being around 1 minute long) which will feature every day road scenes recorded from a car. In 13 clips there will be one developing hazard, and 1 of the clips will contain two developing hazards.
You will be scored from 1 to 5 on your response to the hazard as it develops, 5 being the highest. The pass mark is 44 out of a possible 75.
Most pupils study for the theory test in their own time, though I am happy to answer any questions you may have regarding either part of the test.
See below for a video explaining the theory test. It's a good idea to study for your theory alongside taking practical lessons.
Tips
Although questions are straight forward some learners fail because they are not ready for the test. Be sure you are well prepared when you book the theory test.
Think ahead, most theory test centres are fully booked 2 - 4 weeks in advance so don't wait until the last minute to book.
